Evolution of Microprocessors
History shows that the ancient Babylonians first began the use of abacus the primitive calculator made of beads in about 500 B.C. This simple calculating machine eventually sparked human mind into the development of calculating machinery that uses gears and wheels made by Blaise Pascal in 1642. Refinements continued with the giant computing machine constructed with relays and vacuum tubes in 1940’s. Next the transistor and solid-state electronics were used to build computers of 1960’s. Finally the advent of Integrated Circuits led to the development of the microprocessor and microprocessor-based computer system after 1970. In 1971 Intel Corporation introduced the world’s first 4-bit microprocessor with P-MOS technology named as Intel 4004 with 45 instruction set.
