TECHNIQUES FOR USING UKE

there are many techniques that are executed using the attackers force.since,in karate there is no use of weapons but only empty hand we must realize how important the dodging .there is secret saying in ‘budo’ seldom block with a sword. In karate, if the situation requires you can block an attack standing firmly where you are. There are several verities in the same method of uke on both depending on the situation and the attackers.

IMPORTANCE OF UKE (BLOCK)

Since, all the katas starts with a ‘uke’ (block), it seems to be rather contradictory that actually uke in karate is the attack and the counter is the defense. The defender does not start attacking after blocking the opponents attack .but, the blocking itself makes more than an attack and stop the opponent further attack. The practice of `karate` must always have the feeling in it. As mentioned above the `uke` is not simply a block but includes like `uke` -bezushi i.e., dodging and blocking(uke nakashi).

MORE GUIDANCE

Like a hot spring, karate continually gives off heat and then returns to the source.
One should not think to win, but should think not to lose.
When troubled by an adversary, shift your position.
A contest exists in how you control the situation.
Consider other peoples hands and feel as swords.
When people leave the karate school they encounter 1, 00,000 foes.
for beginners there is only one style; afterwards comes natural form.
While ones form may be correct, it is a different matter in real combat.
Do not neglect the rhythm of flexibility in the mastery of strength.
Always begin a session with 30 minutes of basics. If you rush a head too quickly you will find that the basics do not get established thoroughly and through you whole karate life you may have speed and power but that perfect style and fitness which is attainable never happens for you.

GUIDANCES TO BE A GOOD KARATE-KA

First know yourself and then know about others.
Always remember to begin and end with a bow – respect is the keyword.
There are no first strikes in karate.
Karate assists righteousness.
Acquire spiritual skills rather than techniques.
The mind requires fearlessness.
Laziness breads misfortune.
Karate does not exist in the dojo alone- it should be a way of life.
The study of karate takes lifetime.
If all things were done like karate, there would be a great beauty.

SHOTOKAN

Shotokan is one of the major styles in karate in Japan. It is characterized by its long and deep stances (dachi) and the uses of movements in this style are more linear movements. Shotokan Karate has slight of the circular actions that are found in Okinawan styles of karate. It has the body conditioning and supplementary training exercises typical for Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate. Tournaments and point-sparring are vital to the Shotokan karate.
